Prestige skin care proving popular
The UK prestige beauty industry generated £2.6 billion in sales during 2019, largely driven by skin care.
According to research released by The NPD Group, sales of prestige women's face skin care grew by 2% last year. Despite the total prestige beauty market being currently valued at £2.6 billion, the sector still experienced a decline of 3% in comparison to the same period in 2018.
The prestige make-up market also decreased 8%. Valued at £721 million in 2019, The NPD Group attributes the fall to growing numbers of consumers embracing a more ‘natural look'. In fact, this trend has been cited as boosting the growth in women's face skin care, where sales rose 2% in 2019, with the overall sector reporting sales of £605 million.
When it comes to purchasing habits, the market for online beauty products continues to perform well, reporting an increase in sales of 6% over the last 12 months compared to 2018. Ecommerce now accounts for 22% of all sales in the prestige beauty market, while Bricks and Mortar represents 78% of the market.
